The Truth about Mega Pixels

trail camera image 1Purchasing the best trail camera is a procedure that requires certain knowledge of some basic specs and properties. The overwhelming majority of people are not that experienced, so here’s some information to help you figure it out.

In an effort to avoid confusing you with complicated numbers and features, trail camera brands tend to focus on one single aspect: the resolution of the camera, or the amount of Mega Pixels.

Even though it does contribute to the quality improvement of a photograph, it is not as crucial as advertisements claim it to be, and it is definitely not the single most important aspect of the camera.

Investing in a good lens will make a way bigger difference than purchasing a game camera based on how big of a resolution it can offer. Unfortunately none of the trail camera brands actually tell us what kind of lens is in their camera.  This is something you may need to call and ask or look for in the reviews of Amazon.

What is the meaning of megapixels and what do they offer?

The prefix “mega” is used in many different cases, most of which pertain to technology. “Mega” means 1 million. So, for example, the term “3 megapixels” translates to 3 million pixels.

A pixel is the unit used to measure the size of a photograph. The more pixels it contains, the larger the photograph you can take.

Having the ability to take high resolution photographs is an advantage for sure, but it’s not entirely related to quality, even though a certain number of megapixels is needed to ensure that the camera can take pictures with the maximum quality allowed by its components.

The two most popular benefits of that ability are the printing size and the display size, both of which are self-explanatory. Taking a big photograph allows a person to be able to choose a big print size while the display size refers to viewing the taken pictures on a large monitor like the one of a PC or a TV. The more megapixels the image contains, the fewer distortions and “grains” will appear on the screen.

Why is the lens the most important part of a camera?

trail camera image 2The lens and its specs define what type of photographer you are. Landscapes, portraits, close-ups, long distance photographs all require different types of lenses.

The focal length is the spec that everyone is aware of, even though the term may be unknown to some people. It’s used to describe the zooming abilities of a lens, meaning how far and how close to an object the camera has to be in order to be able to focus and take a quality picture.

Image stabilization is equally crucial since it can block the blur effect that could appear if your game camera was slightly moving while taking the photograph.  Wind would be the major cause of this.

The aperture is a term that is not frequently used simply because it requires a rather extensive description. In simple terms, the aperture controls how much light will reach the sensor of the camera. More light equals to focusing on the center subject of the photograph while darkening or blurring the background while less light captures the sharp details of both the subject and the background.

Why is the resolution emphasized way more than the abilities of the lens?

This is simply a matter of marketing and finding the most effective way to impress the consumers. An amazing trigger speed time or maximum detection range may be fascinating to less experienced hunters but may not be the most important aspect of a trail camera.  Try instead to find out the quality of the lens in the trail camera and you’ll be much more satisfied with the images captured by it.
